This museum guide re-design came about as part of a plan to try and reduce the number of collateral pieces being offered to visitors. In addition to condensing content, my goal was to make a smaller guide that could more easily be carried by guests and included information that was more useful for both walking around the museum and for when the guide was taken home with the guest. The first step included a meeting with museum employees and a volunteer who has a pulse on what museum guests are looking for in the guide and how they use the current guide.

The previous guide had a poster on the back side, which was removed in order to include more useful content. The additional space allowed us to include some small advertising that could be updated with each print run. Part of the initial discussion included the fact that many museum visitors don't know the car terms often used on signs, so a museum glossary was included in the new guide.

The museum map was updated to be clearer, less crowded, and include more museum exhibits. When looking at the new map, we realized that guests might wonder about the large portion of the museum dedicated to the Learning Center. In general, guests do not have access to that part of the museum, so we used some space to explain the Learning Center and how it relates to a main part of the museum mission: education. Another updated piece of content is the events calendar. Previously, there was an events rack card given to guests with the museum guide. To reduce collateral and increase the chance that a guest will take the guide home with them (advertising outside of the museum!) the events calendar was incorporated into the new museum guide.
